I found my answers after I took the pop culture course. Pop culture is consists of people, events, places and objects. People who live in the society, she or he already is involving by pop culture. In the beginning of this class, I thought that I’m an immigrant. I didn’t get in the American culture. Pop culture didn’t affect me. Now, almost at the end of this semester, I realized that I am affected by pop culture. For example, TV programs are parts of pop culture. I watch them when the TV is on, I didn’t mean to achieve something from them, but they unexpected impressed in my mind. Pop culture is in our life.
- Culture Identity
I’m a Chinese who is living in America, and is affected by Chinese culture and American pop culture. By my opinion, American culture is like a “salad bowl”; it can let many ethnicities or races stay in the same society. But nowadays, our traditions are losing little by little. One day, our descendants will build a new society. What will the society culture look like? I have no idea! Let our descendants to do that.
· Reading
In the past of this semester, we read many articles. I especially like the article of “literacy and Text Messaging” because I just learned to use text message to text my son in this year. Since my son needed me to pick him up after school, he always sent message to me. When I respond with calling him, he always transfers to voice mail. The best way is text him. I’m enjoying practice my English while I sending text messages. In the meanwhile, I didn’t see any problem of my son’s literacy. He is still working hard in him essays which including more eight pages. I’m glad he do a good job on his reading, and I’m thankful about the way of communication that between my son and me by texting.
· Music
Music project was the one of the difficult project that I did in pop culture class. I don’t like much of pop music. I like some music which is soft and is singing by beautiful voice. Mariah Careh is the one of the famous singer that I like in America. Her voice is perfect. Her song “Through the Rain” is my favor song. It encourages people to face the bad situations bravely. “Never give up” is Mariah’s symbol.
· Movies
Million Dollar Baby” is the movie that I chose for my movies reviews project. It was about an extra older woman boxer was trained by a trainer to achieve million dollars. In the period, the woman and the old trainer established a relationship like father and daughter. But the woman lost the freight and she became a patient who need machine to support her life. Struggling the emotion and the fact, the trainer chose to accept the idea from the woman and ended her life. It is a good movie. It won four Oscar awards, including the Best Picture, the Best Actress, the Best Director and the Best supporting Actor.
Interesting about movie, I went to cinema to watched “Date Night” three weeks ago. The lack of knowledge for actors and movies, I can’t critical whether this is a good movie or not. Disagreeing with Tony’s review which published at tonymacklin.net, I still thought this was a good movie, at least I could hear people were laughing at the cinema. In my opinion, if we want to enjoy our life, we don’t need to stay in the condition which is wished to find out the error of someone or something. Life is short, more laugh could help us with our health.
· Technology
Since our society is full in technology, people rely on technology a lot. Can you imagine what does it look like if we don’t have electricity? No TV, no computer, no air conditioner, then what can we do? Can we go back to the ordinary life, such as very day go to bed after sun set; finding a place with shade and fanning a fan to make us cooler or communicating with others in front of you)? The past was pasted. Technology plays an important role in our life. As a modern person who lives in our society, we hardly live without technology.
· Glog
As a task that was requested by our pop culture’s teacher, my group created a Glog. http://uspop.glogster.com/uspop. In this Glog, we can see there are four pictures on it. It represented pop culture and high culture; a section of voice’s interview pasted on it. It showed our interviewee’s opinion about pop culture and high culture. It was a good experience for us to take a look around the downtown area and knew the different ideas about cultures. Actually, pop culture and high culture are existing in our life. For example, when we are listening to the pop music, we are still interested to watch the exhibitions in museums or the histories around the world. So, pop culture might become high culture or high culture might become pop culture in our future.
· TV
American Fun Video was the famous TV program that I watched. This show collected a lot of funning scenes that recorded by different families. You could see there were many funning things happened in different families. I think those people who sent those funning videos to the show wanted others to share their happiness. I really enjoy the time that I spent with my family while I was watched that show. That show became the way to improve the relationship between my family and me. This is a modern society, everybody is busy, spend time with your family is the best way to communicate with them. Hopefully, there are more TV programs could let family enjoy together.
